Mario Rodriguez 3-1 Gouge By Ashley Iles – 1-1/4

This tool is made according to Mario Rodriguez’s specifications. Mario told us that when he’s turning, he likes to switch tools as little as possible, so having a versatile tool is essential. The 3-in-1 combines the basic functions of three turning tools: a roughing gouge, a skew, and a general, fairly large, spindle gouge. What additionally makes this tool special is that it’s forged out of 3/8″ HSS bar stock, so it’s massively heavy and solid in use. This makes it ideal for the occasional turner. The sides of the tool are ground (9 degrees from vertical) so that you can cut into a sharp corner like a skew chisel (and from both directions too). It can shape beautiful curves and get into tight corners for clean detail work. The handle is kept short for control and nimbleness. The sheer size and weight of the tool makes it a bit expensive, but the heft makes it easy to control. It’s a production tool for the occasional turner. 1-1/4″ (37 mm) wide.

Except where noted all tools are made of high speed steel (HSS) and are sold handled. Tony Iles hand finishes each and every turning tool himself and is proud that every tool is shipped with its surfaces ground and edges broken. These are tools that will feel wonderful in the hand, with a heft makes them feel very solid – a real aid in turning.
