Unlike an orbital sander, which has a sanding pad that moves in little circles, the linear sander has a pad that just goes back and forth. This gives you a scratch pattern similar to hand sanding, and, more importantly, means that you can easily sand profiles like molding, banisters, corners and edges. You might think that this linear sander is a real specialty sander – and you would be right – but we find it’s been surprisingly popular among architectural woodworkers who had typically found themselves hand sanding profiles and are thrilled with this way to speed up the task. The top-notch dust collection for which Festool is known prevents dust build-up and sandpaper clogging, and that’s even more important for a linear sander than it is for a rotary or orbital sander because of the linear sander’s restricted stroke. In addition to the flat sanding pad that comes with the machine, you also get a 90 degree sanding pad so that you can sand coves and other profiles. Lots of other profiles are available as accessories, including a kit where you can make your own custom pad to fit almost any profile. Comes packed in a Systainer 1.

This sander uses standard Festool 80mm x 133mm (3 5/32″ x 5 1/4″) hook and loop sanding sheets.
